Summer Morning on Portland. Dorset 66x61cm oil on board

Celebrating Creativity Across the County

This brand-new major open art competition is a landmark first collaboration between Dorset Visual Arts and Dorset Museum & Art Gallery, with support from Dorchester Arts, Arts in Hospital and Evolver Magazine.

Over 100 selected works capture the essence of the region’s landscape, people, history and culture, exploring each artist’s relationship to the area. Dorset’s rich history has always provided stimulating subject matter for artists, from Turner, Constable and Thornhill to Paul Nash, Mary Spencer Watson, Sir Anthony Caro and Dame Elizabeth Frink. Now more than ever, the visual arts offer a vital means of understanding the world, inspiring, uplifting, and educating us all. Alongside the equally inspiring history and heritage of Dorset Museum & Art Gallery’s collection, The Dorset Open showcases a wealth of creative exploration and enquiry.

Entries were carefully reviewed by a professional judging panel of five experts drawn from across the arts and cultural sectors

DAVID ATKINS – SOLO SHOW OF THE NORTH NORFOLK COAST

Solo Exhibition of New Paintings at Burnham Market Gallery

A Morning Walk on Brancaster Beach oil on board 61x81cm

‘This new body of work has been made over the past year with most recent visit in early spring.

Working in the places familiar to me I have throughout the seasons responded intuitively to the weather, light and the space of what’s in front of me.  Each season for me contains a particular feeling and this I think finds its way into the work.  Autumn offers such rich, deep colours and dramatic skies.  Winter is a challenge with gun metal greys and silver light. Summer was a joy being on the beach trying to capture the heat and brightness with day-trippers enjoying the sea, sun and sand.  I waited patiently for the spring before my last visit and delighted in days where colour was returning to the land and sky.  Cobalt blues, hints of pink and splashes of bright yellow combined with the chorus of birds singing in the gentle warmth of lengthening days.

These paintings of Norfolk I hope convey some of the beauty of this place and the continuing inspiration I find here.’

Sea Paths and City Streets

The sun is setting and I’m racing to put down colours and marks in a frantic struggle to capture this moment. I know it’s my only chance and that tomorrow things will be different.

In all the places I visit there is an opportunity to paint the light, space and the life going on in front of me. I’m painting towards getting a feeling of a place, a day, the weather, and the season.  I do this using large brushes, lots of paint and a great deal of hope.

Paintings of North Norfolk

Fairfax Gallery      Burnham Market Norfolk

I lived for a short time in North Norfolk in 1991 and since leaving have visited every year to paint.  It is a hauntingly, beautiful landscape with incredible light, space and skies.  My paintings are an ongoing testament to the landscape of this place.
